The Butterfly Effect

WORKS BY MONICA VILLAREAL

“This body of work has evolved over the years. I first starting painting butterflies 3 years ago. I remember being captivated by the wings that I started to study them. As I worked on hundreds of different pieces over the years, I started learning about them as well. Small things like the difference between a male and a female butterfly, or how some moths can be confused with butterflies, and even about an ongoing more philosophical discussion of the stereo types and meanings associated to both. In parallel, I was also noticing small changes occur in the way I approach them, going from detailed work, to more expressionist harsh lines and coloring. The way the many different colors and shapes are balanced in the wings of each species, paired with the fluid motion of the wings, has had an impact my art in general. This is the Butterfly Effect.” - Monica Villarreal on The Butterfly Effect
